Day 2. Colombo - Pinnawala - Sigiriya - Polunnaruwa (310 km - 7 hours on the road)

In the morning after breakfast we go to Sigiriya, check into a hotel and explore Polunnaruwa. But on the way, according to the plan, we still have Pinnawala. There, on the banks of the Maha Oya River, an orphanage for orphaned and injured elephants was established in 1975. Currently, the orphanage has become the largest in the world, it contains and protects about 90 orphan elephants, of which 60 are newborns. Pinnawala is a unique place where you can not only watch elephants bathing in the river, but also wash them and feed them fruits. And babies - milk.
And then we are waiting for Polunnaruwa - the second capital of Sri Lanka, 11-13 centuries AD. The main attraction of the city is the Gal Vihara temple - the most famous temple in Sri Lanka. Four Buddha statues in various poses, carved into granite rock, are called "the best sculptural group in the whole world."
Dinner and rest at the hotel in Sigiriya or Khabarany.

Of course, the most interesting part of the program is the observation of wild elephants on the banks of the Minneriya reservoir, where they come for fresh grass during the dry season. There are more than 400 elephants in the national park and this is the largest population in the world concentrated in one place (for an additional fee of US$ 70 per person with entrance tickets and safaris).
In the afternoon, according to our plan - "Fortress in the sky" - Sigiriya. Sigiriya or Lion Rock, 370 meters high, was named so because of the huge stone lion that once stood at the entrance to the top. At the top, the ruins of the Upper Palace remained, and at the foot is the Lower Palace, surrounded by walls and a moat filled with water.
On the way back we will visit a batik factory. Batik is the national craft in Sri Lanka. As a result of the painstaking work of local craftsmen, works of art appear that are not ashamed to be taken as a gift to friends.

The final point of the route of this day will be the last royal capital of the Sinhalese Sri Lanka and the current cultural capital of the island - Kandy.

These are exactly the places described in the legendary Hindu legend "Ramayana" - the cave of the ruler of the island of Ravana and the waterfall of his own name.
