The temple complex covers an area of 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. Its distinctive five towers are featured on the Cambodian flag, and art historians consider this 12th-century masterpiece a prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture. The five towers of Angkor Wat symbolize the five peaks of Meru, the surrounding wall symbolizes the mountains at the edge of the world, and the surrounding moat symbolizes the ocean beyond.
